what i believe

Speaking to a friend last week, an interesting topic arose. Does a good relationship base itself around strong similarities in values, beliefs and one's morals and do you both have to think the same way to be a successful couple?

In terms of religion, most of the wonderful couples i have met have similar beliefs eg. both christian, both catholic, both believing in God one way or another. But have you ever see a protestant date an athiest? Think not.

Perhaps it is why our old skool parents want us Asians to date Asians - so we can produce super smart mutant Asians? Hopefully not.... Rather they want us to be with someone with similar values and beliefs to them (and hopefully you).

In the dating game - we are often asking this question, whether it be subconsciously or consciously - do we click? What makes a couple click? As much as people deny it , looks or appeal is important. However, when it comes down to nitty gritty of it, what makes a couple click is how they see the world together and how complimentary they are to one another. We not only need a similar (not necessarily the same) sense of humour but also the ability to communicate our thoughts, ideas and share opinions. If you find the other person has no sense of humour, cant hold a decent conversation (or mindless depending on your mood) then you'll get bored. But still, if you dont share the same idea of whats right and whats wrong, then I believe its a fundamental problem.

An old lady once told me (and i kid you not) - your looks will die, but when you get old, the important thing is that you can still talk to one another.

I agree totally about the similar morals, beliefs making a successful couple. Different interests (time apart) are fine, but if you want a relationship where you spend considerable time together, it's nice to do something u both enjoy!

Old ladies always have the good advice! This one patient told me the secret to long lasting love was "to watch tv while holding hands and to say "I love you" before bed!" Great advice!
