A good read

It has been a while since I've picked up a good book but after a lot of good recommendations, I have finally been drawn to open up High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. Halfway through it, it is a real can't-put-down-book, so much so that I've almost missed my train stop a few times this week and been run over by numerous cars while crossing the street. With its wit, candidness and funny insight into the male psyche, it has got a real mix of things, one main one being music- with oldies such as Madonna's Holiday, Stevie Wonder's I just called to say I love you, and Katrina and the Waves' Walking on Sunshine getting a mention. The insight into how a man deals with breakups, the scarring effects and his mental growth (or lack thereof :P ) from pre-puberty through to puberty through to manhood is thoroughly engrossing and incredibly amusing!! Great topics such as first base ->second base i.e tits -> sex , performance anxiety issues, ex's - its all such a great read, particularly for a girl *grin*.

As I am writing this entry, another book pops into my head. It is Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. A book which I hate with pure passion, not because it was a book i had to study back to front in high school, but because it was a hideously hard read for a paperback half the thickness of High Fidelity. It was deep and dark yes (about the evils of imperialism as i remember it), but just a book that i will forever dislike. Books that I do like from high school? The Crucible, Othello and The Handmaid's Tale.

A Eulogy for Brutus

In January of 2004, my housemate Dion brought home two little fish. Brown and orange and super active they both swam around playfully in their huge tank, or so it seemed. After about 3 weeks, we noticed that one fish seemed to always chase another fish, and a few weeks later, the other fish stayed only in one corner of the tank, under the filter. Soon enough, this fish started to tremble. Ive never seen a fish tremble, and it was scary because we realised that it was being bullied and suffering miserably from stress. And so it was, one fish was left and I named it Brutus (Dion called it Rex) Brutus was a cute little aggressive Oscar. Oscar are special fish as they are extremely territorial and dont like other fish in its hood. So, Brutus stayed in our big tank all by himself.

As months progressed, Brutus grew larger and larger from 2 cm to (before his death) roughly 25cm. He became more aggressive and would splash, gulp and snap during feeding time and also had a nasty habit of smacking his head on the glass ceiling of the tank. Perhaps it was this constant damaged that caused Brutus to behave so aggressively.

Last week, Brutus started swimming strangely and would often stay in a corner for hours upside down but still moving. Then he started swimming normally so we were unpreturbed. Then he started to lose his appetite and did not eat. This was worrying considering his usual voracious appetite. Two days ago, i noticed a white area on his belly that was never there before - it looked like mould!!! We knew his days were seriously numbered. Today, as i sat in my room, i heard a loud bang (usually signalling Brutus smacking his head on the ceiling of the tank) and when i went out to investigate, he floated slowly to the bottom and sank upside down for the last time.

I must admit, i shed a tear as he has been our proud pet since i moved into the apartment. Sigh....

Rest in peace Brutus.

Ben and Kev's Excellent Adventure

Ahh.. another successful birthday party thanks to the original party boys - Ben and Kev .

Thanks to everyone who came and hope that everyone enjoyed the smoozing and boozing.
As i recover today from the big night of mixed spirits, bumping and grinding and lots of hugging and smiles, i am remembering the highlights of the night. There was some sexy backless tops (oh alright it was just the two of us :P ) which was not only asking for some tactile action on our smooth exfoliated soft skin, but also good ventilation from the steamy sweaty dancing. There was also some muscle rippling singlet action by a few special fellas which was sadly hampered by management who couldnt stand to see such hot physiques. And we definitely cant forget the major grinding action in The Cage - some grinding fellow grinders and some pole dancing wannabes. And not forgetting all the beautiful people and a unusual absence of skanky hos (sorry boyz :P ) as well as the great funky sounds thanks to DJ Hyper.
Overall, apart from some mild alcohol poisoning :P (anyone got a liver to spare??), it was a great night!

Here are some more pics from last night. Cheers :)
Exxxcellent Duuude
